"We Have a Jewish Problem"
A major portion of Romans deals with Paul's "Jewish Problem". Keep in mind that after two thousand years of Christian antisemitism we need to be very carful with Paul's rhetorical goals here. Paul never envisioned himself as "converting" from Judaism to Christianity; those terms are anachronistic, reflecting a latter time after the destruction of the temple when the two became distinct religious beliefs. In other words, Paul did not quit being a Jew to become a Christian. In Romans, Paul must address the question that if Jesus is the fulfillment of God's promises, to and thru the Jews, then why are they not accepting the message? Think about it, if God has simply abandoned the jews then this calls into question God's promises and God's faithfulness - if God abandoned the Jews what's stopping God from abandoning all of us? So today, we tackle that problem that may not seem relevant, but it is - in many ways.
